Sant Kabir apostle of egalitarian society: Dy CM

JAMMU: Remembering Sant Kabir on his 614th Birth Anniversary, Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand described him as one of the preeminent saint of Bhakti movement and an apostle of egalitarian society. He said Kabir propagated message of peace, love, and devotion to the supreme lord, without any discrimination of birth, place or caste.
He was addressing a mammoth gathering at a function organised to celebrate Parkash Utsav of great saint and social reformer Bhagat Kabir, here today. The function was organised by Bhagat Mahasabha.
Urging people to follow the path laid down by Kabir, Tara said teaching of revered Saints have universal appeal and people should work together to further the cause of creating an equal society.
“Real tribute to the great Saints is to follow the path shown by them and to adopt their teachings in our day to day life,” he added.
Reiterating resolve to the government to work for uplift of marginalised sections of society, the Deputy Chief Minister said exemplary initiatives have been taken by the present dispensation to ameliorate the lot of underprivileged. He said the government has enacted landmark Inter-District Recruitment Bill, which would ensure reservation for Scheduled Castes in all the regions of the State.
“The bill is a result of extra-ordinary efforts of Omar Abdullah with strong support from the Chairperson UPA Sonia Gandhi”, he added.
He said the long pending demand of holiday on Kabir Jayanti has also been agreed by the government.
He said since long down-trodden communities had been fighting for reservation in the State and numbers of sacrifices were given for the cause, but it was during the tenure of previous government led by Ghulam Nabi Azad that the reservation was given legal status.
On the occasion a Satsang was conducted by Baba Milkhi Ram Bhagat, who impressed upon the followers of Sant Kabir to believe in oneness of God and try to find the supreme lord within one’s own self.
Prominent among those present on the occasion included, Chairman, Mahasabha Dr. Rajesh Bhagat, President G.L Bhagat, Milkhi Ram and Kasturi Lal.
The Mahasabha presented various demands for consideration of the government which inter-alia include, land for construction of a temple of Bhagat Kabir, construction of community hall at Kabir Temple Marh and early construction of memorial of Martyr Bhagat Amarnath at Batote.
Tara Chand assured that all genuine demands would be taken up on priority.
Later, the Deputy Chief Minister visited Baba Mai Mal Devsthal at Dori Dager, one of the famous religious places of the region where people had gathered in large numbers for the annual congregation.
At the end of the function Guru-ka-Langer was also served to the devotees.
Meritorious students of the community, who qualified prestigious examinations of IAS/IPS/KAS/KPS as well as those who had shown excellent results in school and college examinations, were honored on the occasion.
